Improve your putting techniques

Easily one of the most difficult aspects of the game of golf is the putting techniques.

Everyone seems to have their own style. Yet, the outcome is meant to be the same. Getting the ball in the cup is the target and knowing how to do it right is the challenge.

If you can learn to read a green and get the ball where it needs to go, you will find yourself with far less pars and bogeys.

The Right Putter

When it comes to putting techniques, the right putter is the first thing you should be thinking about. Finding a putter that is comfortable and easy to handle should be top priority. This may take a few trips about town in order to find the right putter for you. Once you are comfortable with the new putter that you purchase, it is then time to start practicing with it.

When you get a new putter you should allocate some practice time to putting. You can do this at a practice facility or you can do this in the comfort of your home or office. Getting familiar with the weight and balance of this new putter is critical if you are going to be successful with it.

Stance

The general rule of thumb when it comes to stance in putting techniques is for your nose and your belt buckle to be aligned. From there you should have freedom to move your arms back and forth like a clock pendulum. This forward and backward motion is what is going to drive the ball in the direction you want it to go.

The most important part about a stance is the comfort of the specific golfer. Just because you see others with an upright posture does not mean that this is going to work for you. You may have to take on a more bend at the knee like stance to get the alignment correct for yourself. Whatever way you need to stand for your stance you should be comfortable and confident.

Reading The Green

There are many things that will be important when you are reading the green. Putting technique is as much about the swing as it is reading the green. Valleys, divots, and or breaks in the green will alter the path of your ball once struck. It is out of your control when the impact is made so you will need to know how to compensate for these subtle differences in green plane.

If you find that the green breaks to the left, you are going to need to shape your putt to the right a little more to compensate for the curve of the ball path. This will allow the ball to naturally follow the shape of the green and inevitably find the cup.

Stroke

When it comes to putting techniques you need to understand that the right stroke is vital to your success. How much power you place on your swing of the club will determine how fast the ball will travel. This can play a key role in either powering past a small rise or completely overshooting the green.

Usually the best way to generate momentum with the putter is to bring the club back no more than 10 inches from the surface of the ball. Your follow through should be one fluid motion and not have a break in between your backswing and final contact with the ball.
