Hybrid Clubs And Controversy
from Good Golf Swing Aids

Should These Hybrid Clubs By Illegal On The Tour?

While the PGA Tour have a very stringent set of rules where clubs are concerned, there are as usual with most sports a few questionable entries.

Today the big question is should hybrid clubs be allowed on the PGA Tour?

These clubs, not iron or wood, have surfaced and are making noise. They are both aggressive in styling and equally in play.

Basically forged from two clubs combined, the hybrid clubs of today are noted to have a significant advantage over their old school counterparts.

When you combine a wood and an iron in one club, as you may already assume you get increased stats across the board.

More Power

With as much as 15% more aft weight on a hybrid club head versus a traditional iron, hybrid clubs will obviously offer you more power off the draw. This type of club in comparison to say a 5 iron will produce at least 30 more yards in the right hands and right set of circumstances. When you place this situation in a tournament setting, you can be sure that someone is going to call foul.

This is where the PGA needs to start paying closer attention to the fine details of their sport. While this type of club at the moment is not illegal, there are other players that simply prefer not you utilize this type of club. What this does is actually take their game down a few pegs from the competition that is in fact using them.

More Loft

Just as the power is impacted when using hybrid clubs, so too can be stated about the loft of a shot as well. This type of club makes cranking out of the rough or thick grass a snap. The fact that this type of club utilizes a cambered sole allows this club to excel in many different situations. The fact is however, many of the more traditional golfers on the tour simply do not want to make the switch.

This can be for many different reasons one of the most prominent is because they would like to keep the golf game real. A tour professional does not or should ideally not need any assistance on their game. All golfers are to have equal opportunity during tournament play. If one golfer has an edge, this is something that should be reviewed.

The Bottom Line

The fact that hybrid clubs exist, is merely a testament to the advances of this wonderful sport. Innovation can gladly take center stage when it comes to the advances in clubs and equipment, yet it is for the better of the entire sport that it done so with discretion.

Whatever the tour decides when it chooses to review this issue, one must only assume that it will be for the best of the sport in a decision. The golf tour will always have some that simply do not agree on the use of one item or another, yet this does not mean that you yourself cannot enjoy the edge with these nifty new clubs.
