One of the most appreciated and appealing aspects about the game of golf is that you are really not competing against other players.

There are several scenarios that you can encounter when you are playing on a golf course today. It is the design of the course itself that is basically considered your opponent.

Natural Incorporations into the Golf Course Designs

When a new large golf course is being designed today you will find that the developers look for certain geographical elements that can utilized within the design. These elements are sought after for two reasons. The first reason is that they can utilize this as a hazard to the player. The second being the eye candy that the new golf courses have become.

The likes of trees, cliffs, and waterlines, will always offer the designer an ideal blueprint on which to start with. These elements do not have to be produced in one form or fashion. They are in fact there to use freely. Good golf course designs can introduce these elements into the course and make it that much better without additional cost.

Man Made Elements

It is highly unlikely that you will find a large pit of sugar sand simply lying about in an area to use as a hazard. This is why the course designers have to have sand traps man made. The same can be said for ponds as well. While it is not impossible to find a natural pond on a large stretch of land, you will usually find that designers would rather strategically place a man made pond on a course.

This will allow them the opportunity to create a difficult driving situation or a tough approach shot to the green. This is where the competition between the designer and the golfer begins. A good designer will make a course tough to play on. A good golfer will know how to play the course. This is without any natural interference such as weather.

Choosing The Hole Layout

When designers of new golf courses start to design, they need to have an idea of hole layout. This basically means that they have to have an idea as too how many par 3,4,and 5’s they are going to use. While there is no set minimum or maximum for these holes, you will see a healthy balance of all hole pars incorporated. Some of the more famous courses in which the pros play on will have a layout that is set up with the majority of the holes being par 4’s. With a layout of 10 par 4’s, 4 par 5’s, and 4 par 3’s, you can have a varied and delightful course to play on.

Finding the right balance for the designer is often done with the lay of the land in consideration. What the property holds as far as elements and openness, will dictate what the designers can do with it.
